Virtual Language Lab is the package used in Languages. It's basically a modern day replacement of the tapes they used to use in lessons. VLL is only installed on the computers in the Languages computer lab.

Operation

The program pulls it's data from an Access data base on Athena, this can be found in \\athena\APPS\Learner\Languages\VLLab\Database

This is the main program itself.

Recorder

This is the provided program used for recording new title to be imported into the program. It records all of its files to .wav, the program (on the previous version used for Win2000) has been known to have problems in saving the files once they have been created. This was due to some form of scripting error in the program itself. The work around was to use another recording program.

VLL settings etc

NOTE: for options with a numerical value 0 = false and -1 = true.

Adding content

To add content to VLL you firstly need to make sure that your user name is in the instructors list in the settings table in the database. This is explained below.

To add content:

1. record the audio you need to a .wav file
2. load VLL
3. click the import button
4. locate the file and click open

Adding instructor users

ONLY ADD USERS IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

To add instructor users to the database you will need to access the database using Access. To database is located at \\athena\APPS\Learner\Languages\VLLab\Database\XP.

Once you have opened the file, load the 'options' table and then add a new record with 'InstructorLogOnName' in Option and the user name in OptionValue. Please make sure you record the users name in the Description field; it's not vital but it helps for tracking purposes.
