New Printer

After unpacking and checking everything is OK, you need to register the support pack. Follow the instructions in the support pack, using the online method. Make a note on the cover like the name of the printer it's for, it's location and the start-date for the support contract. Keep the pack on the shelf with all the support packs. Enter the information in the Guru Database

Print Server

If using and external Print Server:

  • Connect the print server to the printer via a parallel cable.
  • Connect the print server to the network with a standard cat-5 patch cable.
  • Power up the server, wait about a minute for it to pick up its settings via DHCP.
  • Make sure the printer is switched on and then press the Test button on the Print Server. You should receive two pages of details regarding the server's set-up, including it's IP address
  • Open the Web JetAdmin application, and login using the Admin password. Go to the Web JetAdmin section of this document

If using an internal Print Server:

  • Power the printer and fit standard cat-5 patch cable to the network socket, leave it for a minute so it can talk to the DHCP server
  • Press (and hold) the Test / Go button, the printer should print a test page and somewhere on there will be its IP address
  • Open the Web JetAdmin application, and login using the Admin password. Go to the Web JetAdmin section of this document

Web Jet Admin

  • Enter the IP address of the print server in the Quick Device Find box (on the left hand side of screen) and hit Go.
  • You should (after a long wait!) be presented with a status page for the Print Server. Use the drop down box near the top of the screen to select the Configuration page.
  • Below the drop down box you should see a menu to select Quick Set, Device, Network and Security settings. Click Device, then make sure the Integration URL check box is ticked, fill in the Description including the printer model and its location, click Apply when ready to continue. You will need to enter the Admin password
  • Click Return to configuration page and select Network. Enter the chosen IP address for the device, typically 10.10.150.X where X is the room number or an available number over 100 for a "Staff only" printer. Subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 and the gateway is 10.10.0.254. Apply the new settings.
  • You may need to enter the new IP address in the Quick Device Find box to return to its page.
  • Select Update from the drop down list, if asked select Update JetDirect and click Next, the middle of the screen will display the latest available update, the top of the screen shows the current version, compare and if necessary hit the Update button. This will take a long while, get some tea.
  • If you were previously given the option to update the printer firmware, select Update from the drop down list and then Update Printer Firmware and click next, You will need to look on HP's website to see if anything newer than the current version is available. If so, download and un-zip it on the T: drive, then back on Web JetAdmin, Browse to the file and then click Upload
  • Finally, select Configuration from the drop down list, then click Network on the menu. Disable all protocols except TCP/IP.
