Red Carpet - Software Updates

Red Carpet is the tool used to apply security and bug-fix patches to the Novell OES supplied software. It can't help with anything that wasn't on the OES/SLES cdroms.

The GUI client does not work - (in OES1?) there's been a bug since day one, Novell will have you believe that it works fine now but all advice I've seen says it ain't so.

Red Carpet Updates On The Command Line

The command line tool is really easy to use, just remember to login as root or su to root first

ares:~ # rug up

This is pretty much it! It will go off and see what updates are available and ask you if you want to install them. Becareful: This command will only let you download and install all available patches, it won't let you pick a selection of updates.

ares:~ # rug pl

This will list all of the patches installed. The gotcha is that it only displays their patch code, and not the name of the program and the new version number that will be in effect after the update. Guess you'll need to search the novell site to find out exactly what's what.

There is more information on the rug command line tool in the Open Enterprise Server Administrator's Handbook which is probably on Barbara's desk.
