Bar Code Readers

Views:

Notes on the bar code readers in the LRC.

The manual for these are useless. The interface type is "Wedge" as in the guy on star wars? Maybe.

  1. Getting them to do ANYTHING.
    1. Turn off the PC, connect the reader.
    2. Connect a PS2 keyboard to the reader's PS2 socket.
    3. turn the pc on.
    4. check the numlock light on the PS2 keyboard is ON.
  2. If your lucky the reader should now at least do something, to see load windows start notepad. Point reader at any old bar code. One of 4 things will happen. either the reader will do nowt, or it will bleep and do nowt, or it will fill notepad with something other than the the data on the barcode or it will work.
    1. If it does nowt, check the numlock light and that the PS2 keybaord is working. If not try and get the PS2 keyboard to work then try again.
    2. If it does nowt and bleeps, check that the ps2 keybaord works, if it does you should be able to set the reader up. Use the manauls (the LRC has these) see below.
    3. If it reads gobledegook, its working but not set up right Use the manauls (the LRC has these) see below.
    4. If it works disconnect the keyboard and run away before it stops working.
  3. Configuring the scanner using the manual - the "manual" is a collection of badly explained bar codes to chage the settings of the scanner. Its writern in barcode readable bollocksese.
    1. Find the section marked "wedge", scan the top barcode marked default, to reset the unit.
    2. Scan the other barcodes that seem to match PC such as AT keybord, English, single keyboard, etc till it scans correct stuff into notepad. If it doesn't work use the rest to defaults one again and try other combos thill it does.
    3. Do NOT use the auto keyboard langauge option at all as it doesn't work and will stop the reader from even resetting its self.
  4. Finishing off.
    1. if the thing is working, you can safey unplug the PS2 keybaord and leave the USB one if appropropriate and it should still work.

Don't boather with the configuration software menetioned in he manual its useless for non serial readers as far as I can tell. For curiosity or suiside induing frustration you can downlaod it and failt to get it to do anything (get website password from http://www.bugmenot.com
