General
There are three images, one each for Curric (students), Admin (support and teaching staff) and Support (IT Support) workstations.
The images are stored in \\apollo\images\
Once the image has been pushed on to a workstation the only human interaction that is required during the XP installation is the entering computer name, the rest is taken care of. Machines will need to be checked to see that they have the correct printer installed, drivers, network configuration, etc, etc. Many machines need a non-standard setup, see the Imaging checklist.
Each image is an installation of windows with various customisations such as additional applications and configuration. Drivers for almost all the various bits of hardware around the college are also included. The microsoft sysprep tool is used to remove the security and hardware information from windows. This allows an image/snapshot of the system to be taken and copied to other workstations in the college.
When a "sysprepped" image is first booted up, the windows setup runs. This allows for new hardware to be detected and for the unique security information for the workstation to be setup. For more information about sysprep see the MS Sysprep Introduction
What follows are details of how the images have been created.

Sysprep Procedure
Once you have a base image that you are happy with take a backup image, before you run sysprep.exe
Then the the following procedure should be used to sysprep the machine:
- delete temporary files, recently used docs, history, event logs, etc
- run \\hades\post-imaging$\presysprep.cmd
- set MSD driver to standard
- copy over \\hades\post-imaging$\sysprep.inf to c:\sysprep\
- run c:\sysprep\sysprep.exe -reseal -mini -pnp -quiet
Post Imaging Setup
Background
Some configuration of the workstation cannot be included as part of the image, but it can be scripted to happen automatically after a workstation has been imaged. This also makes it easy to ensure re-imaged PCs always have the latest versions of software such as the Novell Client, Anti Virus, Office or Zen.
Once an image has been pushed and the mini-setup has run: the computer reboots; automatically logs in as administrator and runs a batch file. The file is c:\windows\post-imaging.bat, it simply maps a drive to a server and then calls another batch file on the server. Each image calls a different batch file to allow for any unique things we might need to setup just for staff or support machines.
All the files live on a remote server (hades) so that it is easy to update/edit what happens e.g. keeping the Novell Client up to date.

Post Imaging Sequence
Here is a step by step list of what the scripts do:
- map drive to \\horus\post-imaging$
- change current working directory to root of the newly mapped drive
- Call <image-type>.cmd
- Disable system-restore, via the registry
- set the XP installation source, via the registry
- import WSUS settings, via the registry
- Enable Compatible Roaming Profile Security, via the registry
- Install Novell client
- customise Welcome screen image
- customise GINA banner
- Setup Message of the Day (display security policy at logon)
- install Zen
- Set ZenTray to launch automatically, via the registry
- install office xp
- install Symantec Endpoint
- setup normal screen saver, via the registry
- setup default wallpaper image
- configure windows firewall
- Disable Windows Scripting Host, via the registry
- restart computer

admin.cmd differences
- Different Wallpaper
support.cmd differences
- Different Wallpaper
- Antivirus installed from .\symantec-anti-virus\admin\
- Different novell client settings needed, pass setupnw.exe and different unattend.txt
Novell Client
The batch files call setupnw.exe to install the novell client on the workstation. The setup program takes a /u parameter which specifies the client settings and installation options. Support machines have almost everything enabled where as Curric/Admin machines are very locked down.
The options are settings are stored in an "unattend" file. These can be made with the .\admin\nciman.exe program in the client installation folder. Then when the setup program can be run as follows:
setupnw.exe /u:<filename>
